Description

The 296 GTB is the latest chapter in Ferrari's long history with mid-rear V6 engines. The first Ferrari to be powered by a mid-rear V6 was the Targa Florio-winning 246 SP in 1961, followed by the 156 F1 car that won Ferrari's first-ever Formula 1 Constructors' title. In 1982, the 126 C2, also with a mid-rear V6, became the first turbocharged single-seater to win an F1 championship.

Up for auction here is a 2022 Ferrari 296 GTB fitted with the ‘Tempesta’ package by Mansory. The car is finished in gloss black and adorned with exposed carbon fiber accents that are part of the Tempesta package.

The engine is a 3.0-liter (2,992 cubic centimeters) twin-turbocharged V6, paired with a YASA electric motor, for a combined power output of 858 horsepower.

This 2022 Ferrari 296 GTB ‘Tempesta’ was designed as a demonstrator to showcase the ‘Tempesta’ package, which offers both visual enhancements, with a custom body kit and interior package, as well as a performance upgrade for the powertrain. With the performance upgrade, the 296 GTB puts out 858 hp (870 cv), which is 39 more than the car in factory spec. This example has only done 170 km.

The specifications include gloss black finish for the exterior and bright yellow leather upholstery for the interior. Notable choices for the build include:

  • Carbon fiber front lip and front splitter, race flaps, side skirts, front fenders, wing mirror cover with red accents, and rear diffuser with integrated brake light
  • Carbon fiber rear wing with air splitter, decorated with the colors of the Italian flag
  • Mansory individualized emblems on the front and rear bumpers, left and right fender, and exhaust tip
  • 21-inch front and 22-inch fully forged carbon wheels

The interior features include:

  • Bright yellow leather upholstery with red piping and stitching
  • Leather and carbon steering wheel
  • Extended shift paddles, decorated with the Italian flag
  • Customized floor mats and entrance panels with the Mansory logo

The Ferrari 296 GTB was unveiled as a groundbreaker for a new generation of Ferrari supercars, with the ambitious goal of increasing performance, while also improving efficiency.

A two-seater coupe, the 296 GTB is a plug-in hybrid, designed to be used both with and without the internal combustion engine in action. The powertrain comprises a V6 unit with a high specific output and an electric motor.

With 218 horsepower per liter (221 cv/l), the 296 GTB set a new specific power output record for a road-going production car. The 2,992 cc engine is equipped with two turbochargers, and it is capable of delivering 654 hp. The electric motor, developed by UK-based YASA, produces an additional 165 horsepower. The combined power output is 819 horsepower and, thanks to the 7.45 kWh battery pack, the 296 GTB can be driven in fully-electric mode for up to 25 km - or 16 miles.

In terms of performance, with the Mansory Tempesta Package, the 296 GTB is capable of accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, and it has a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).

The 296 GTB was first unveiled in 2021, and production began a year later. Even though this car was not designed as a replacement for an existing model in the line-up, Ferrari considers this the spiritual successor to the Dino 206 GT/246 GT from the 1960s and 1970s.

Just like the Dino, the 296 GTB is considered a 'Berlinetta' (Italian for ‘little sedan’), a sports coupe designed to be a sports car while also being a comfortable cruiser. Also, again just like the Dino, the 296 GTB is designed with a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.

The engine is located right between the passenger compartment and the rear wheels for better weight distribution, and the rear wheels drive the car.

By contrast, one key difference between the Dino and the 296 GTB is the former was fitted with a transverse engine, whereas the latter is fitted with a longitudinal engine, meaning the engine is mounted in line with the vehicle.

The Tempesta package (Tempesta is Italian for thunderstorm) by Mansory is designed to make the 296 GTB more powerful and more aggressive, with extensive use of carbon fiber appendages, giving a more aggressive stance.
