SBX Cars is proud to offer for sale this 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 showing just 57,052 miles on the odometer at the time of this cataloging. Finished in Grey Blue Metallic over a Blue leather interior, this W116 is now offered by the selling dealer with service manuals, promotional materials, service records, a reproduction window sticker, spare parts, and a clear title.
Building on the luxurious W116 chassis which first made its debut in the fall of 1972, Mercedes-Benz engineers raised the performance bar in 1975 with the launch of the 450SEL 6.9. This executive sedan was peak “over-engineered Mercedes,” and serving as the flagship S-Class for the brand, it boasted elite luxuries for the time like automatic climate control, generous wood trim, a sophisticated self-leveling suspension, an available power sunroof, and most notably, unparalleled performance via its massive 6.9-liter V8.
This beautifully-preserved W116 was manufactured in Stuttgart in June 1977 and originally sold via Van Winkle Motor Co. in Dallas, Texas with an original retail price of $41,715. Having accrued fewer than 60,000 miles over its lifetime, it remains well-preserved and unmodified even after 49 years on the road. The braking system has been recently serviced, and the car is ready for years and miles of touring enjoyment.
The 450SEL 6.9 was a no-holds-barred engineering masterpiece when it debuted five decades ago, and this low-mileage, unmodified example will bring the perfect balance of classic, executive presence and abundant power to a boulevard near you.
Service records will accompany the car dating back to 2019. The brake master cylinder and booster were replaced recently under current ownership. The car is said to exhibit working condition of controls and electrical functions. The air conditioning has not been tested.
The data tag decodes as follows:
The seller has provided a gallery of photographs as well as several short videos showing the exterior, interior, the engine bay, and a start-up sequence.
Noted Imperfections:
Car and Driver called the 6.9 both “silky and sophisticated.” When Mercedes-Benz set out to make the ultimate hot-rod luxury sedan in the 1970s, the 6.9 rocked the automotive world. This low-mileage, highly-original 450SEL is a top-rank classic with investment potential.
