The Rolls-Royce Goldfinger – or Phantom Goldfinger, which is its official denomination – is one of the most incredible one-off Rolls-Royces ever created and an incredible tribute to James Bond and the 007 saga.

Commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, this special-edition Rolls-Royce draws inspiration from the iconic 1937 Phantom III Sedanca de Ville driven by the villain Auric Goldfinger in the movie.

Adorned with real gold accents, and a design that blends cinematic nostalgia with proper engineering, the Goldfinger Phantom stands as one of the most expensive Rolls-Royce creations ever.

The story behind Rolls-Royce ‘Goldfinger

The Rolls-Royce Goldfinger was born from a collaboration between Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke division and EON Productions, the creators of the James Bond franchise.

The Phantom Goldfinger, commissioned by an unnamed Rolls-Royce collector in England, celebrates the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, which introduced the world to the gold-obsessed villain and 007 nemesis Auric Goldfinger and his 1937 Phantom III (pictured above).

The Phantom Goldfinger pays homage to this cinematic icon, but with a modern twist.

The commissioning client, a lifelong James Bond enthusiast, requested a vehicle that captured the opulence and audacity of Goldfinger’s character, complete with gold accents and references to the film’s iconic scenes, such as the Swiss Alps chase and the Fort Knox heist.

It took Rolls-Royce’s artisans three years to meticulously craft this one-off Rolls-Royce.

The name ‘Goldfinger’ not only evokes the film but also reflects Rolls-Royce’s tradition of naming its most exclusive builds after significant cultural or historical touchstones, which the 1964 movie certainly was.

The project required extensive research into the original 1937 Phantom, including consultations with film archivists to ensure authenticity.

But this is a Rolls-Royce, so nothing was left to chance.

The result is a custom creation that feels like a time capsule, bridging the gap between 1960s cinema and 21st-century luxury.

Bespoke at its peak: what makes the Rolls-Royce Goldfinger unique

The Rolls-Royce Goldfinger is arguably the most incredible bespoke Rolls-Royce ever, mainly because it’s packed with features that are entirely unique to this vehicle.

At its core is an 18-carat gold bar, shaped as a Phantom ‘Speedform’ and concealed in a secret vault within the center console, accessible only via a bespoke key.

The Spirit of Ecstasy, Rolls-Royce’s iconic hood ornament, features a ‘gold reveal’ effect, with 18-carat gold partially plated over solid silver.

The interior is adorned with gold-finished air vents, organ stops, and speaker grilles, each crafted with precision to reflect the gold Rolls-Royce theme.

The glovebox bears a debossed inscription of Auric Goldfinger’s famous quote.

“This is gold, Mr. Bond. All my life, I’ve been in love with its color, its brilliance, its divine heaviness,” the quote reads.

Other bespoke elements include custom-embroidered headrests with ‘AU’ monograms (the chemical symbol for gold) and a bespoke clock inspired by the Bond franchise’s iconic ‘gun barrel’ sequence.

These details, combined with hand-selected materials like rare woods and premium leathers, make this bespoke Rolls-Royce a singular work of art, tailored to the client’s vision and unmatched in its exclusivity.

Exterior design – a statement in gold

The exterior of the Rolls-Royce Goldfinger blends classic design with modern cues.

The car’s two-tone yellow-and-black livery mirrors the 1937 Phantom III from the 007 film, with the vibrant yellow hue meticulously color-matched to archival footage.

The black finish wraps around the coachwork in a seamless graphic, creating a striking contrast that emphasizes the car’s imposing presence.

The 21-inch black disc wheels, inspired by the original Phantom’s classic design, feature silver ‘floating’ hubcaps that remain stationary while the wheels rotate, adding a touch of elegance.

The Spirit of Ecstasy, a hallmark of every Rolls-Royce, is a focal point of the Goldfinger’s exterior.

Its unique gold-and-silver composition required months of experimentation to perfect, ensuring the gold plating gleamed under any light.

The iconic ‘AU 1’ license plate, secured specifically for this vehicle, nods to the chemical symbol for gold and the original film car’s registration.

Additional James Bond-themed bespoke touches include gold-plated badges and trim elements.

Interior craftsmanship and personalization of the Rolls-Royce Goldfinger

Every detail in the cabin of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Goldfinger reflects the Goldfinger theme.

The dashboard’s ‘Gallery’ features a hand-drawn, three-dimensional isoline map of the Furka Pass, the Swiss Alps location central to the film’s chase scene – one of the most memorable in the 007 saga.

Crafted from darkened stainless steel with a gilded surface, this artwork took over a year to perfect, with 10 prototypes created to achieve the desired effect.

The bespoke clock, inspired by the Bond franchise’s ‘gun barrel’ sequence, adds a cinematic flourish, while the Starlight Headliner recreates the constellations above the Furka Pass on July 11, 1964 – the final day of filming Goldfinger.

Now, that’s a nice touch.

The headliner’s 719 fiber-optic stars emit a golden glow, creating a mesmerizing ambiance.

The rear cabin is equally opulent, with Royal Walnut picnic tables inlaid with 22-carat gold depicting a map of Fort Knox, referencing Goldfinger’s ‘Operation Grand Slam’.

The seats are upholstered in hand-stitched leather, with gold ‘AU’ monograms (another 007 reference) embroidered on the headrests.

Harlequin umbrellas, stored in the rear doors, feature a red, blue, green, and yellow color scheme inspired by the film’s golf scene, adding a playful nod to Bond’s encounter with Goldfinger.

Every element, from the gold-threaded stitching to the bespoke treadplates, reflects Rolls-Royce’s commitment to personalization, making the Phantom Goldfinger a truly unique Roller.

Performance under the gold

Under all this gold, the Phantom Goldfinger is powered by the same 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine as any other Phantom.

It produces 571 horsepower and 664lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-60mph sprint in approximately 5.5 seconds, which is pretty impressive for a car this big.

The eight-speed automatic transmission and air suspension system ensure a ride that is 100 percent worthy of a Rolls-Royce: effortless and whisper-quiet.

The Goldfinger does not feature performance upgrades beyond the standard Phantom, but then again that’s not what this car is for.

This car was built as a tribute to a great movie, and as a gorgeous one-off.

The role of bespoke builds in the Rolls-Royce brand

The Rolls-Royce Goldfinger is a perfect example of the brand’s Bespoke program, which allows clients to create vehicles that are as unique as they want.

Rolls-Royce’s coach builder program, responsible for iconic one-offs like the Sweptail and Boat Tail, will build just about any Rolls-Royce the customer wants.

The Goldfinger joins this elite group of beautiful cars, where every element is tailored to the client’s desires, making each vehicle a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Rolls-Royce has a long history of creating bespoke models, from limited-edition and special-edition Phantoms and Ghosts, to fully custom builds like the Goldfinger.

Collectibility and value of the Rolls-Royce Goldfinger

The Rolls-Royce Goldfinger is a collector’s dream, and not just because of its connection to 007.

It’s not for sale, but if it were, it would easily fetch between $15 million and $20 million at auction, making it one of the most valuable Rolls-Royce vehicles ever built.

Its value is likely to appreciate further due to its rarity, and of course its connection to the James Bond franchise and the 007 saga.

The use of real gold, including an 18-carat gold bar and a 24-carat gold-plated VIN plaque, adds to its allure for global collectors, as does the ‘AU 1’ license plate, a nod to the original film car.

Bespoke Rolls-Royces like the Goldfinger often command premium prices at auction, as seen with other one-offs like the Sweptail.

Its status as a one-off certainly helps – it always does, as we’ve seen on SBX Cars.
