Description

Embodying British luxury and performance, this is a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage. It is finished in black pearl over a gray leather interior, and is equipped with a 3.6 liter, inline-six cylinder engine running power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. It is built to UK specification, and is right hand drive.

This Coupe was delivered in March of 1963 to Brooklands Motors in England. 1963 was the last year of production for the DB4, and a total of 1,185 DB4s were built from 1958 to 1963. This example was one of only 136 Series V Vantage coupes produced to finish the model line. It came from the factory in the black pearl finish with blue trim, with 16” chrome wire wheels fitted as an option, and additionally was retrofitted with air conditioning at a later date.

After spending its first nine years in the UK, it was sold and shipped to the United States in 1972, remaining there until 1990, when it arrived in Japan via Australia. There, the Series V Vantage was restored extensively by an Aston Martin specialist, and was part of a larger Aston Martin collection.

Currently this DB4 features its original engine, and was refinished in its original color, while the interior has been retrimmed in gray leather.

In the 1950s, Aston Martin found itself regaining its footing in the aftermath of World War II. Manufacturing plane parts had become the job, suspending auto assembly along with almost every other European automaker. While the earlier Aston Martin coupes were successful, the DB4 is the model that many consider the turning point for the company’s success and survival.

This replacement for the DB Mark III was not a refresh, but a new chassis from the ground up—reflecting the new approach and ability that Aston Martin had at the time. With an all-new facility in the parish of Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire, England, the DB4 was the first product of the newly energized company. While manufacturing and assembly were to be handled there, the company commissioned the Italian firm Carrozzeria Touring in Milan for the exterior styling—which was an evolution in many ways from the DB Mark III, but much more flowing and cohesive. The chassis itself was heavily influenced by the Italians as well, with their signature 'Superleggera' tubular steel frame construction, and a new engine designed by Tadek Marek that featured dual overhead camshafts, while both the block and heads were made from aluminum alloy.

With many updates coming with each series, this Series V was produced in the last year of the DB4 model run. The key difference for the Series V was the slightly taller, longer body that created more interior space and also extended the rear taillight section for a more elegant form. This example presents beautifully, as its recent restoration and careful upkeep at the hands of Aston Martin specialists make a compelling case for the next potential owner.
