SBX Cars is proud to offer for sale this 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Challenge Racer with 99 miles at the time of this cataloging. Finished in black with white accents over a black interior, this limited-production race car is offered by the selling dealer on a Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO).
Shelby Cobra roadsters were known for dominating racing circuits in the 1960s, boasting unparalleled speed, agile handling, and a visceral, “no-frills” open-top driving experience. Decades later, the CSX-4000 series of Cobras represented a continuation series – produced and sanctioned personally by Shelby American in the 1990s, and beyond.
This Cobra race car, known as chassis CSX 4257, was originally assembled in 2001 for the Shelby Cobra Challenge Senior Racing Series, and it was set to compete in events slated for the 2002 season. As a high-profile race program, the Challenge was designed to feature well-known drivers in identically-prepared Shelby Cobra vehicles. Legends of motorsport like Bob Bondurant, Mario Andretti, and Parnelli Jones were slated to participate at six road races scheduled in conjunction with CART races, but the series did not take flight after all.
Still, a select few race-built Shelby Cobras assembled for the circuit remain in existence today, and this well-preserved icon of motorsport is a turn-key Cobra ready to perform. It was acquired by the selling dealer from its long-term original owner. As an officially-sanctioned car built by Shelby, it is a highly-collectible roadster with an unmatched pedigree. Note that the vehicle is sold on a Manufacturer Statement of Origin and designated for track-use only.
There is no known service history for this race-dedicated Shelby.
The vehicle is noted to have 99 miles, but total mileage is not known.
The selling dealer has provided a photo gallery. This Shelby shows some cosmetic wear consistent with a vehicle of its age and regular use.
This Cobra’s unique story is one of inspiration and allure – a racecar crafted and tuned by Shelby American for a circuit that would never transpire. And 25 years following its assembly, it still conveys all the right elements of nostalgia that the original Cobra became famous for – among them, blistering speed, captivating looks, and an unmatched thrill-ride driving experience.
