SBX Cars is proud to offer for sale this 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo, showing just 281 km (174 mi) on the odometer at the time of cataloging, following a comprehensive overhaul. One of only 1,672 examples built during its two-year production run, this Turbo spent time in Germany before moving to the Netherlands in 1998. It remained off from 2013 until its restoration.
In 2024, the car underwent an extensive refurbishment in Belgium and the Netherlands that addressed every major system. The engine was refreshed, the transmission serviced, and the braking and suspension systems rebuilt with new components throughout. Exterior trim was replaced or refinished, hardware zinc-plated, and the body repainted in correct Polaris Silver, underscoring the thoroughness of the work performed.
Imported to the United States in 2024 and now offered in California with a clean Montana title, this 2002 Turbo presents as a carefully restored and mechanically sorted example of BMW’s first production turbocharged road car. Its condition reflects both attention to detail and respect for originality, resulting in a car that feels purposeful, precise, and authentically period-correct.
During the 2024 refurbishment, the pistons were replaced, a 123ignition distributor installed, and both the alternator and starter motor rebuilt. The Kugelfischer injection pump was cleaned and resealed, injectors cleaned, and the fuel tank powder-coated and relined. The water pump, oil lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel lines were replaced.
The transmission was refreshed and fitted with a replacement clutch, hydraulic cylinders, driveshaft flex disc, and center support bearing. The brakes were overhauled, the master cylinder rebuilt, and the suspension renewed with Bilstein shocks, bushings, tie rods, springs, ball joints, and hardware. The underside was repainted during the process. Extensive restoration and undercarriage photos accompany the car.
The five-digit odometer on this 1974 2002 Turbo was reset during refurbishment and now reads 281 km. The seller states that the locks and various hardware were zinc-plated, and multiple exterior components replaced or refinished.
The vehicle was imported to the United States in 2024 and is offered with a clean Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.
The BMW 2002 Turbo occupies a singular place in the marque’s history as its first production turbocharged road car and one of the most distinctive homologation-era sedans of the 1970s.
This example benefits from a sweeping and methodical refurbishment that addressed mechanical systems, structural integrity, and cosmetic presentation with equal care. The result is a Turbo that feels both historically faithful and freshly recommissioned.
For collectors drawn to BMW’s early forced-induction era, this 1974 example delivers authenticity, correctness, and serious attention to detail throughout. Its documented refurbishment, period-specific components, and factory turbocharged character position it as a standout among surviving 2002 Turbos.
