Team Lotus Black and Gold Collection

AUCTION PREVIEW - July 2024

SBX Cars is honored to offer the Black and Gold Collection – the largest collection of Lotus historic racing cars and assets from the famous John Player Special Formula One era ever to be sold. The collection started in 2020, when Kai Nieklauson - founder of ChromeCars together with Mike Gensemeyer, owner of Britec Motorsports - had the idea to reunite all the assets from that successful period in time for Lotus.

Not only did Lotus win seven Constructors and six Driver World Championships during the period, but it also started the era of sponsorship in Formula One. The black and gold cars, in their John Player Special guise, were not only successful in racing, but they also initiated a distinctive brand image that after 50 years, is still globally recognized and respected.

Over the past four years, Nieklauson has grown the collection through the acquisition of thoughtfully-curated Lotus assets from across the world, completing the unique Black and Gold Collection. The incredible Team Lotus Black and Gold Collection to be offered at auction at SBX Cars consists of more than 25 lots, including Grand Prix racing cars, race team transporters from the period, as well as the Cessna 414A and Lotus Esprit personally owned by Colin Chapman.

The Black and Gold Collection at Monaco Historique

May 2024 saw us celebrate the 14th Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, where we were treated to something truly spectacular.

Over the course of the weekend, we saw more than 200 gleaming vintage racing cars battle it out, on the iconic streets of Circuit de Monaco.

This was a particularly special weekend for SBX Cars, with five of these historic F1 cars coming up for auction, all competing at the iconic Monégasque racing event.

It was a successful weekend allround. Highlights of the event included Nick Padmore securing P2 in the Lotus 77 in Race E. In Race G, Marco Werner finished second in the Lotus 87, with Michael Lyons achieving a third-place finish in the Lotus 92.
