This 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS LS6 454, showing 458 miles (737 km) on the odometer at the time of cataloging, is finished in Fathom Blue over a matching blue interior. It pairs one of Chevrolet’s most epic big-blocks with 3 pedals and a clean, stripe-free design.
At the center of this ultra-rare El Camino is the LS6 454—officially rated at 450 horsepower and widely regarded as one of the most potent engines of the muscle car era. Backed by a Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” and a 12-bolt rear with 3.31 gears, it promises the kind of straight-line punch that defined Chevrolet performance at its peak.
With just 12 examples documented in the LS6 El Camino registry — and this car standing out for its subtle spec — it represents a seldom-seen combination of documented provenance, careful restoration, and one of the most serious factory drivetrains ever fitted to a muscle car.
This El Camino was delivered new to Papenthien Motors of West Liberty, Iowa. A refurbishment completed in 2020 reportedly included refinishing the body, re-trimming the interior, and rebuilding the engine and transmission.
Service during the refurbishment reportedly included rebuilding the brake booster and control arms as well as replacing the shocks and brake lines. The 454ci LS6 V8 was rebuilt, and the aluminum intake manifold, Holley carburetor, and exhaust manifolds were replaced. The Muncie M22 transmission has also reportedly been rebuilt.
The five-digit odometer was reset during refurbishment and now shows 458 miles. Total mileage is unknown.
The right quarter panel was replaced during previous ownership. The windshield, rear window, and side glass were reportedly replaced during current ownership, along with the tailgate, bed filler panel, and front-right inner fender.
The trim tag decodes as follows:
The build sheet was reconditioned under prior ownership and is included in the sale, along with refurbishment records.
With just a handful of LS6 El Caminos known to exist, this Fathom Blue example stands out for its documentation, comprehensive restoration, and clean, factory-style presentation. Backed by one of Chevrolet’s most formidable big-blocks ever created and a four-speed to match, it captures the raw, high-water mark of GM muscle in a package rarely seen 56 years later.
