This is the dark horse of the '80s—1987 Buick GNX! Built to smoke Ferraris in total silence—no flashy chrome, just a raw turbocharged menace.

    Overview

SBX Cars is proud to offer for sale this 1987 Buick GNX showing just 2,914 mi (4,690 km) on the odometer at the time of cataloging. Finished in Black over a Black and Sand Gray cloth cabin, this sinister icon of American muscle has been kept in factory-original condition and is primed to dial up the excitement of any serious collection.

Language like “the GNX is an axe-wielding barbarian laying waste to everything in its path”, courtesy of a period Car and Driver GNX test, hints at how wicked this Buick is. Produced for just a single year, as a swan song to the rear-drive Regal and Grand National series, Buick only ever built 547 examples of the GNX, and today’s stunner presents as a spectacular late ‘80s time capsule.

It was a time when the Porsche 911 Turbo went from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, a split the GNX was behind by just one-tenth of a second. Developed in collaboration with ASC and McLaren Performance Technologies, the GNX was a limited-edition skunkworks coupe that took the already impressive Grand National and turned it into a fire-breathing final word on the era of hardcore rear-drive American muscle.

Upgrades ranged from freer-flowing heads and increased boost pressure from the Garrett turbo to a stiffened body and reworked rear suspension. The results speak for themselves and today’s example offers a rare opportunity to get your hands on one.

    Summary

Buick’s objective with the GNX was to build a Grand National to end all Grand Nationals. To do so, the ultra-low-volume coupe turned the wick up on its boosted powertrain to the point that all 360 lb-ft of twist were on tap at just 2,400 rpm.

The transmission was beefed up, the front fenders became functional engine bay vents, the exhaust was opened up, and in the end, Buick had created the baddest Grand National in history. Of course, the fact that the GNX was only sold in black didn’t hurt.

An icon of America’s muscle car glory days, the GNX was a prized collector’s model the minute it rolled off the line. That status has carried forward almost 40 years later as these Buicks remain a hot commodity. Today’s low-mileage, carefully preserved example is one that you do not want to miss.
