OVERVIEW

Offered for sale on SBX Cars is this 1994 Porsche 911 (964) Turbo 3.6 Coupe, finished in black over black leather interior with red accents, showing 12,466 miles at the time of cataloging.

MODEL HISTORY

At the end of the 1980s, Porsche unveiled the new generation of the 911 model (type 964), which would replace the previous G series model, produced from 1974 to 1989.

Whereas over 196,000 examples of the G series model were produced, the production run of the 964 – which occurred between 1988 and 1994 – saw just 63,762 cars rolling off the production line, making the 964 the rarest generation of 911 ever made and, therefore, one of the most sought after today.

Rarity aside, the 964 introduced advanced driving and aerodynamic technology, paving the way for all future models.

Prior to the launch of the 964, every Porsche – including the 911 – had been rear-wheel drive, with the exception of the limited-run 959.

Not only was the 964 the first 911 to send power to the front wheels as well as the rears, it did so right from the word go, with the first 964 model to be launched being the Carrera 4, which featured a complex all-wheel drive system that gave an all-new, all-weather capability to the range.

Porsche’s designers had the task of improving the aerodynamics of the new 964 without radically redesigning the familiar flowing lines of the 911, with an early form of active aero forming part of the solution.

Whereas the outgoing 911 model – the G series – featured a ducktail rear wing, the 964 saw the introduction of an electronically-operated spoiler that rose at 50 mph (80 km/h) and helped to eliminate rear lift.

What’s more, the vehicle’s front bumpers were mounted flush, and a pan was installed under the nose to remove turbulence, with the result that the drag coefficient of the 964 was a dramatic improvement on that of its G series predecessor.

In addition to all-wheel drive and better aerodynamics, the 964 saw the introduction of driving safety systems, such as anti-lock brakes and power steering, as well as a Tiptronic automatic gearbox.

Although it had a relatively short production run, the 964 was made available to customers in a wider selection of versions than had ever been seen before in the Porsche 911.

As well as the original Carrera 4 Coupe, Porsche built Targa and Cabriolet versions with all-wheel drive, and did the same with the Carrera 2 rear-wheel drive model.

Then, in 1992, a special Turbo-look model went on sale in the form of the Carrera 2 Cabriolet, which used the body, chassis, braking system and wheels from the Turbo 3.3.

The first 964 Porsche 911 Turbo – sold in the 1991 and 1992 model years – featured a 3.3-liter engine, however, in 1993, Porsche switched it to a 3.6-liter engine.

Mostly sold as a Coupe, there was a limited Cabriolet production run of the Turbo as well, with Turbo variants including the Turbo S Leichtbau and the ‘flatnose’ Turbo S Flachbaui.

There were track-orientated RS models, too, based on the Carrera 2, released in limited numbers from 1991, in several different specifications.

Although Porsches have appeared in many movies over the decades, perhaps one of the best known is its appearance in the 1995 Hollywood blockbuster Bad Boys.

Directed by action movie legend Michael Bay, the film saw a climactic final chase involving Detective Mike Lowrey – played by Will Smith – behind the wheel of a black-on-black 1994 911 (964) Turbo 3.6.

Interestingly, Bay actually owned the car himself, before selling it for $60,000 after the movie was completed.

Since then, it’s had a number of owners and has been shown at several concours events, with the very special 911 Turbo last changing hands at auction in 2022 for an eye-watering $1.3 million.

THIS 1994 PORSCHE 911 (964) TURBO 3.6 COUPE

Matching that Bad Boys 911 Turbo in specification is the vehicle offered here, delivered new to Isringhausen Imports of Springfield, Illinois in January 1994.

Specified in black (paint color code A1), it was also equipped from the factory with black supple leather seats, with headrests featuring the Porsche crest, and black velour floor mats.

Additional equipment specified included a set of 18-inch polished wheels, an electric sliding sunroof, and remote six-disc CD changer.

The seller advises that the vehicle’s interior was subsequently customized in January 2004 by RPM Sports Cars in Houston, Texas at a cost of $16,017.

Customization work included the installation of Can-Can Red leather piping, carpet welting, door panels, complete lower dash, steering wheel, and shifter and handbrake gaiters.

Carbon fiber was also extensively used throughout the cabin, including the dash, console, door handles, and shifter and handbrake lever, while Can-Can Red seat belts were installed to both the front and rear of the vehicle.

The 964’s power comes from a 355-horsepower turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

MECHANICAL

Documentation provided by the seller states that in January 2018, the vehicle was inspected by Paul Miller Porsche of Parsippany, New Jersey, during which time it was found to have multiple engine and transmission leaks.

At the same time, it was noted that there was a trace of a possible leak from the right front brake caliper, the left front wheel bearing back cap was sweating, the cigarette lighter was inoperable, the battery had started to leak, and the sunroof was not closing properly.

The sunroof’s front air deflector was found to have a broken plastic arm, therefore, it was removed and both arms were replaced, as were the springs, and a new cigarette lighter was supplied, too.

Further documentation provided by the seller states that in October 2018, Elite Motors of New Jersey removed and reinstalled the vehicle’s engine and transmission, at a cost of $12,874.83.

While the engine was out, a top-end reseal was performed, RSR rocker shaft seals were retrofitted, and a valve adjustment was performed.

Also replaced were the timing chain guides and tensioner, with the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotors additionally replaced.

At the same time, the engine heat shields were sent away for powder coating, and the AC system was checked for leaks, after a new receiver drier was installed and then filled to the proper levels.

The vehicle’s battery was also replaced, with acid from the old leaking battery cleaned up.

In June 2019, the vehicle once again visited Elite Motors due to an issue with the instrument panel cutting out.

Following a road test, the workshop found that the issue occurred when turning left and applying decent throttle, which was diagnosed as being due to brake fluid being present in the main relay and harness of the front fuse box.

After tracing the wiring, the issue was found to be the brake booster pump, which was leaking internally and pushing brake fluid through the electrical portion and into the harness.

To remedy the problem, the brake booster pump was removed, the wiring corrected, and the unit resealed, after which the system was bled of all air and filled to the proper level.

The vehicle was most recently serviced in July 2024 at 12,418 miles (approximately 19,985 kilometers) by Town Porsche in Englewood, New Jersey, during which time the oil and filter was changed, and a multi-point inspection was carried out.

During that multi-point inspection the vehicle was found to have a faulty fuel accumulator, which was subsequently replaced, as was the fuel filter.

Having five previous owners and showing 12,466 miles at the time of cataloging (approximately 20,062 kilometers), this Porsche is offered for sale with up-to-date service records, supported by a clean CARFAX report.
