Description

OVERVIEW

SBX Cars is proud to offer for sale this 2013 Local Motors Rally Fighter. A rare off-roader, this example is finished in silver with a black cloth interior currently showing less than 5,000 miles and was featured in Fast & Furious 8.

MODEL HISTORY

For those wondering whether this Rally Fighter is a sports car or desert racer, the answer is simply, “Yes”. This exceptionally rare vehicle - fewer than 100 were built - comes from Local Motors, an outfit that sought to upend automotive norms when it was founded in 2007.

In just 18 months, the automaker turned out its first Rally Fighter via crowd-sourcing. The design was chosen from a field of applicants and is said to be inspired by the P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Upon purchase, buyers were encouraged to visit the Local Motors factory and participate in production.

As a result, every Rally Fighter has build aspects unique to the model. But all of them meet Road & Track’s description of being “...wonderfully overstuffed with muscle and suspension.” The muscle being a Chevy small-block V8 and the suspension a bespoke setup featuring King components with up to 20 inches of travel.

Here is a car that will turn heads everywhere it goes thanks to stunning bodywork and the growl of the supercharged mill in this particular Rally Fighter. The fact that it can tear up the trails with the best of them is just icing on the cake. But perhaps the cherry on top of this epic automotive engineering effort is that it’s a bona fide movie car.

THIS 2013 LOCAL MOTORS RALLY FIGHTER

There’s no denying that this 2013 Rally Fighter is an amazing machine. But dialing up the stature of this particular model is its Fast and the Furious movie franchise provenance. This exact vehicle, Local Motors build number 55, was Letty’s hero car in the 8th installment of this legendary car film series, The Fate of the Furious.

Even better, when it was returned to street-legal configuration, the owner was careful to leave minor cosmetic imperfections alone to ensure the Hollywood provenance remained intact. So, the original silver paint and tubular red front brush guard are a little rough, but that’s part of the charm and should appeal to serious movie car buffs.

Other exterior highlights of this 2-door coupe include a front skid plate, a roof-mounted light bar, a rear bumper guard, and tow hooks at both ends. This Rally Fighter also features LED headlights and tail lamps. Of course, the low-slung swagger of the fiberglass composite body mounted on a tubular steel space frame ensures serious road presence.

That swagger and presence are backed up by a supercharged LSA 6.2L V8 under a big clamshell hood. Packing 556 horsepower and 551 lb-ft of torque, this powertrain can sling the Rally Fighter to 60 in about 4.2 seconds and on to an estimated top speed of 150 mph for those with nerves of steel.

A 4-speed automatic transmission routes power to the rear wheels, ensuring tail-happy driving dynamics. It works in conjunction with a carefully configured weight distribution to lend credence to the sports car side of this Rally Fighter. As seen in the gallery, the engine is mounted well behind the front axle to help in this regard.

Along with this front mid-engine configuration, Local Motors mounted the engine a few inches off-center - toward the passenger - to account for the weight of a driver. All with the aim of delivering high-end sports car handling to go with the high-speed off-road racing capability.

As for keeping the power planted, this 2013 Rally Fighter rides on black-finished 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 32-inch Goodyear Wrangler rubber. The independent front suspension features billet double A-arms, while out back there is a 4-link solid axle with a Panhard rod.

King coilovers with remote reservoirs provide 18 inches of travel up front and 20 inches out back. As for braking, this Rally Fighter boasts power-assisted disc brakes all around with ABS. The 12.88-inch front rotors are clamped by 6-piston calipers, while the rear consists of 13.88-inch rotors with 4-piston calipers.

Inside, the Rally Fighter’s purpose-built cabin is headlined by a pair of black cloth-upholstered Recaro front buckets with 5-point harnesses and an exposed tubular steel structure. A 3-spoke Momo steering wheel fronts a set of gauges including an odometer reading 4,670 miles at the time of vehicle cataloging.

An additional set of gauges is mounted on the driver’s side A-pillar. Technology highlights include a premium sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, and a backup camera.

This Rally Fighter also features manual air-conditioning, a pistol-grip shifter, and its build number - 55 - on the door jamb. Per the seller, cargo space is limited but sufficient for adventure gear.

MECHANICAL

Universal Studios modified this 2013 Rally Fighter for use in The Fate of the Furious film. The process of restoring it to street-legal condition included swapping the fuel cell for a gas tank, replacing the plexiglass windshield with safety glass, installing sway bars along with interior frame bars, a backup camera, and a replacement head unit.

Invoices in the gallery detail this work, which was completed by Anytime Auto Works in 2021. Other notable services completed at the time included fitting rear seat pads and belts, installing a supercharger fuel pump, wiring repair, exhaust system work, and an oil change.

Additional work completed by RK Motors in 2024 consisted of replacing a defective crankshaft position sensor and starter, repairing faulty turn signs, installing a new driver’s side door handle, adding a temperature gauge, and swapping the halogen headlights for LED units. The vehicle was also tuned to eliminate knock at low RPMs.

A series of gallery videos illustrate start-up, light off-roading, a drive-by run, a walk around of the Rally Fighter, and a highlight reel of the vehicle in action on the production set of Fast & Furious 8.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE SALE

Along with a clear Montana title, this 2013 Local Motors Rally Fighter comes with a framed movie poster and die-cast model of “Letty’s Rally Fighter”, both signed by actress Michelle Rodriguez.
